Snowballs in Summer

After reading the title of this post you're either thinking that the weather over here has turned bad, really really bad, (and you would not be far wrong )
or that there is as much of a chance of a snowball in Summer as there is of a snowball's chance of survival in hell. The latter being not very likely to happen, to put it mildly. But you would be wrong, there is such a thing as a snowball in Summer. Well, there is here at Bliss. Curious? I thought you might be so without further ado take a good look at this surprising occurrence of a snowball in Summer at Bliss.
Yes, it is a rose, how very astute! ;-) She's called Boule de Neige which is french for ball of snow.
What's that you say? What an odd name for a reddish pinkish rose? I'll let my pretty snowball herself explain how she got her name.
And here she is in all her manifestations if not to say glory:
This lovely snowball was born in 1867 and is a member of the Bourbon rose family. When fully grown she will be around 1.5 to 2 meters high and she has (what else did you expect at Bliss?) a wonderful scent. Next Autumn she will be put in my front garden to replace one of my Guirlande d'Amour roses as that one has become slightly too big for its breeches.
Guirlande d'Amour who is either too big or her bed is too small. Or both! :-)

I don't like thinking of snow in the summer, but I'll make an exception in this case. This rose is beautiful.

Hello Yolanda.
Wonderful roses.. perhaps I should try to find "Snow Balls" in Canada:)
Reminding me of the winter to come.

So lovely! I think white roses with a hint of pink or red on the buds are among the most beautiful...

It's fascinating how the colour changes. I would never have guessed from the bud that it would turn out so white!

Ok, You made me thrilled. I was affraid, there was real trouble with weather :) because we had one in Poland last Friday. Here, at EwaInTheGarden there was just extraordinary amount of water and some wind, but in some regions we had... twisters - not occuring before...
This rose is so beautiful. How did you find it? You have a good hand to pick beautiful roses. How are you doing it?

Hi all and welcome to a snowball-y Bliss!

*Tracy: it's a gorgeous rose and I like it very much.

*Jane Marie: I feel the same about snow in summer but this rose I simply had to have.

* Gisela: I hope they have it in Canada too and I love that quote!

* Casbah kitten: yes it is and thanks for the award I will visit soon.

* Katarina: you are absolutely right.

* Layanee: thanks!

* Poppins: not yet is indeed the word. ;-)

* easygardener: you're right, one wouldn't guess that at all and that's exactly why this rose is so special and great fun too.

* Cheryl: I think you can, quite a few rose nurseries have this rose for sale. ;-)

* Ewa: I'm glad you had just lots of rain and some wind but no twisters. Very strange twisters in Poland.
My secret is that I have a very good book about roses and I know some very good rose nurseries too. So first I make a selection by reading my rose book and then, with my list of favourite roses, I go to a rose nursery (in spring or summer so I can see the roses in flower) to see what those roses look like for real (and I smell them too of course) and then I buy one, or two or three. ;-)

Thanks all for commentinmg on my blog, it was a ball, a snowball. ;-)

What a lovely little summer snowball of a rose! I used to have a groundcover-like plant called "Snow in Summer" but I've never seen this rose. It's really lovely.

I expected to find Viburnums or Hydrangeas, not roses! I absolutely love white roses. The colors are gorgeous, but the whites are heavenly. I've only got one white one - 'Glamis Castle' - and I love it. Must get more!

You've always got the most fabulous roses, Yolanda Elizabet! :-)

Heh, I expected a hydrangea...beautiful rose! I wish it were just a tiny bit hardier so I could grow it. Amazing how the bloom changes, too.
